Acne and Acne Scarring

If you spend any time on social media or the internet, you might be led to believe that there are all kinds of “Experts” on acne out there, from beauty bloggers to estheticians. But in reality, the only true acne experts are board-certified dermatologists, who spend many years gaining the appropriate education and hands on experience to treat all kinds of acne, even the toughest cases.

Depending on the type, severity, and treatment history of your acne, your Cypress Dermatology board-certified dermatologist will select the therapy or therapies that will clear your acne safely and effectively. Acne is one of the most common skin diseases that our dermatologists treat every single day and we are very skilled at it!

Effective acne therapy can vary widely. Some patients may have mild acne requiring prescription or OTC washes or topicals alone, others may need a combination of products, prescription medications, and in-office treatments. The most severe cases often require isotretinoin, or Accutane, our strongest and most effective treatment for severe recalcitrant acne. Many acne patients and parents have trepidation over starting themselves or their child on isotretinoin, yet many of these concerns can be alleviated with appropriate education and reassurance. Dermatologists have been prescribing isotretinoin safely for almost 40 years and have more experience than anyone else in making sure a treatment course goes smoothly and leads to beautiful, clear, acne-free skin. A majority of patients who complete a full course of isotretinoin at Cypress Dermatology will never struggle with severe acne again. And even for the most difficult-to-treat acne cases that require multiple course of isotretinoin can be effectively managed and achieve clear skin in the long-term with the help of one of our experienced dermatologists.

Hyperpigmentation and Scarring After Acne:

After clearing up acne, many patients have significant hyperpigmentation and/or scarring they wish to treat. At Cypress Dermatology, we offer many of the latest modalities to treat post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and acne scarring, Hydrafacial (hyperlink please) is a relaxing medical grade facial that can treat acne itself as well as hyperpigmentation. Both Cypress Dermatology estheticians and physicians perform chemical peels which can be tailored to the patient’s needs based on his or her skin type, acne severity, and availability of down-time after the procedure. Chemical peels are useful procedures for acne patients as they are helpful for acne, hyperpigmentation, and deeper peels can even treat severe acne-scarring.

Eclipse MicroPen Elite® for Acne Scars

Microneedling, such as with the Eclipse MicroPen Elite®, is often used to treat stretch marks, wrinkles, and similar problems with skin texture. Its ability to start new collagen production in the skin makes it ideal for reducing the appearance of acne scars. The device makes a series of incredibly small punctures into the skin being treated, each of which launches a collagen-based healing process that repairs the injury and also improves the look and feel of the surrounding skin. Patients who choose microneedling to treat their acne scars will find that the skin in the treated area will resemble a sunburn in the days following their session at Cypress Dermatology. This redness will fade as new collagen grows, improving the look of the scarred tissue and other treated skin.

PRP to Enhance Microneedling

Cypress Dermatology takes microneedling to the next level by adding “PRP” to the treatment. Your provider will take a very small amount of your blood, then spin to pull the platelets and plasma out. The resulting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) will then be introduced into the treatment area, further enhancing the results.
